Stoughton’s history

Stoughton began life as New Hope. The settlement was barely three years old when the Canadian Pacific Railway reached this part of the province in 1904. The CPR chose a spot a little to the south for its nearest depot and named it Stoughton, and before long the community of New Hope moved to join it.

The town once had its own small police service, fittingly called the Stoughton Police Service. It no longer exists, and the RCMP now provide policing for the town and the surrounding area.

Today Stoughton sits about 142 kilometres southeast of Regina, at the end of Highway 33, which is the longest straight road in Canada and the fifth longest in the world. Highways 13 and 47 also serve the town, and it is the administrative headquarters of the Ocean Man First Nations band government.
